So, what is halal nail polish and how does halal nail polish work? Well, there are several requirements to consider, and we’re here to help you make the most informed decision. Our goal is to be transparent with our ingredients and production facilities. You’ll learn a little more about us along the way, too. Because at Picture Polish, we move with purpose and intention.

Water Permeability and Breathability

To perform wudu (ritual washing), water must wash over the skin. Our breathable formula is water-permeable when rubbed, providing a thoughtful option for those who observe prayer. There is much debate online about the permitted number of water-permeable coats applied. The concern is that one coat of a water-permeable polish may not remain water-permeable after several coats. Many of our polishes offer one-coat coverage, and even without a topcoat, manicures can last 3-5 days! So, whether you’re looking for a soft baby pink or a mesmerizing holographic shade, Picture Polish has a wide range of options.

Alcohol-Free Formulation

In addition to animal products being present in most nail polishes, the same applies to alcohol. Many nail polish brands use alcohols like ethanol or denatured alcohol. Neither of these versions of alcohol is suitable for halal nail polish. Using approved alternatives, our polishes deliver a smooth, lasting finish without compromise, and without alcohol.

Ingredient Compliance

Halal nail polish cannot contain any animal ingredients. That includes animal products and by-products. Typically, nail polish ingredients include a combination of animal products and chemicals. Animal-derived components can consist of Carmine, which is used as a red dye (from beetles), Shellac for gloss and shine (from female lac bugs), Guanine for pearlescent shimmer (from fish scales), and animal-based keratin.

While these ingredients are common in the nail world, you will never find them in our polishes. Our formula is strictly vegan with no animal products or by-products. We stand firm in our ongoing journey to create dazzling manicures and pedicures that never compromise on quality or performance. That includes using alternative, natural ingredients, instead of sourcing from animals.

In manufacturing, changes can happen quickly, whether it’s new suppliers or bottle parts. By using a certified halal facility, we ensure our production process aligns with our principles, with no shortcuts or unsuitable substitutions.

Every polish is made in Australia, guaranteeing top manufacturing standards and quality control. We’re involved in every stage and frequently visit the facility, giving us control and oversight that’s often lost with international production.

Cruelty-Free Commitment

Animal welfare is a central aspect of halal ingredient compliance, especially regarding the ban on animal products. We’re proud to share that as a vegan brand, we are also committed to being cruelty-free. We do not, and will never, conduct any testing on animals.

Wudu-Friendly Nail Polish Tests

These Wudu-Friendly nail polish tests using the Alka-Seltzer tablet method were carried out by Jules from Picture Polish. Thin coats were applied and given sufficient time to dry completely. The tablet was submerged in cold water for about 60 seconds. Jules used Spell nail polish as it is one of their creamier formulas to test with Dual Purpose Top & Base Coat and Naked Nail Care Base Coat.

Test No. 1: one coat of base + one coat of polish

Test No. 2: one coat of polish + one coat of top

Test No. 3: one coat of base only

Test no. 4: two coats of polish only

Test No.5: one coat of nail care base only

Test No.6: one coat of nail care base + one coat of polish

The breathable/water permeable formula permits water to flow through, which is particularly beneficial for those engaging in ablution, or wudu, as part of their daily rituals.

Halal Certification

Although Picture Polish is produced in a halal-certified facility, we have chosen to obtain our own Halal Certification.
