What Is a Gel Nail Polish Allergy?
An increasing number of nail enthusiasts are discovering that the convenience of gel nail polish can sometimes come at a cost. Gel polish is widely used however, as its popularity has grown, so too have reports of contact allergies linked to the chemicals used in these formulations.
Unlike traditional air-dry nail polish, gel polish contains liquid plastics that remain in a semi-fluid state until exposed to specific wavelengths of light. Once cured under a UV or LED lamp, these liquids form a hard, glossy coating. This chemical reaction is what gives gel polish its strength and shine, but it is also what can trigger sensitivity in some individuals.
Why Some People Develop Sensitivities Over Time
While gel nail polish is generally safe for most people, some people may develop an allergy or sensitivity to specific ingredients after repeated exposure.
A gel nail polish allergy is a form of allergic contact dermatitis. It is a delayed immune reaction, where the body gradually begins to recognise certain chemicals as harmful.
Mel’s Story of Developing a Methacrylate Allergy After Years of Gel Use
Mel used gel manicures for many years without any problems. Over time, however, she noticed subtle changes in her nails that she could not easily explain.
“I unfortunately had a terrible reaction to methacrylate in gel polishes, but not just polishes. Even my tooth filling,” she explains.
Her nails started lifting from the nail bed, a condition called onycholysis. At first, she assumed it was damage related to gel removal, but the condition continued to worsen. Over several scary weeks, Mel underwent a series of tests to rule out other potential causes, including more serious underlying health conditions.

“All results are good. It has come back to a chemical reaction with Methacrylate.”
While this brought some clarity, it also introduced new complexities. She was advised to avoid acrylates and related compounds where possible, which can be found in a wide range of everyday items such as adhesives, some cosmetic products, and certain medical or dental materials.

The realisation that these chemicals are so widely present made the adjustment feel overwhelming at first in Mel’s situation. She learned that her newfound allergy extended far beyond just avoiding gel polish.
Mel was sad she could no longer use gel polish. “I am very sad I can no longer use gel polish but happy I don’t have any serious health issues,” she says.

It was around this time that she came across Picture Polish. Through one of the brand’s founders, Jules, she discovered alternatives that did not rely on acrylates. “I will be able to feel a tad human and not embarrassed to leave the house,” she says. “I look forward to patch testing different things to see what I can use in the future when my nails have fully repaired. It’s a long road to recovery.”
Mel’s Recovery Journey
“In the months after my diagnosis, I lost almost all of my nails. I had to trim the dead length every few days. I used cuticle oil three times daily and took supplements to help encourage growth,” Mel recalls. “It was an embarrassing thing to endure, but I’m so glad I found the team at Picture Polish. They helped me find safe, beautiful alternatives so I could feel human again. Within a few months, my nails had completely grown back and have never been stronger.”
For many people, nails are closely tied to confidence and self-expression, so changes in their appearance can have a noticeable emotional impact. Finding supportive communities and accessible alternatives made a profound difference for Mel.
Over time, once the irritant is removed and gentle care is reintroduced, both nails and surrounding skin often begin to improve.
“Gel polish was negatively affecting much more than just my nails, something you don’t realise until it’s too late,” Mel reflects.

Safer Alternatives to Gel Nail Polish
Developing an allergy to gel polish does not necessarily mean giving up nail colour altogether.
Picture Polish, founded in Australia in 2009 by sisters Megs and Jules, is one example of a brand built around long-wear colour. Their approach focuses on highly pigmented, expressive nail colour designed for everyday wear. Their products are vegan, cruelty-free, non-toxic, and halal-certified.
